Chili’s gives new members free chips and salsa on every visit, not just the first

Almost every welcome offer in restaurant email works the same way. Join, get something free once, and watch the clock run down on it. The offer creates one visit and then expires.

Chili’s built something different. Its welcome email promises new members free chips and salsa, and the fine print explains the part that matters: “valid upon joining and every visit.”

We tried to join more than 300 quick service and fast casual email, loyalty, and lifecycle programs by hand, using one identity and one inbox. Chili’s is the only brand in the study offering a free item that recurs. Every other free item we captured was a one-time offer.

What the welcome says

The email arrived with the subscriber’s name in the subject line and the offer in the preview:

Subject: “Welcome to My Chili’s, Corrie”

Preview: “Get ready for FREE Chips & Salsa, birthday treats and more.”

The body lays out its perks in plain language:

Thanks for signing up! You’re officially part of the tastiest club in town. As a My Chili’s member, you get these delicious perks:

FREE CHIPS & SALSA. “Sign in when you visit Chili’s or order online to claim your bottomless app.”

FREE DESSERT ON YOUR BIRTHDAY. “Score a sweet treat to celebrate another trip around the sun.”

Below that sits a third benefit, a Margarita of the Month deal that the fine print calls “valid every month, all day every day in the bar and dining room.”

Every benefit in this email is ongoing. One repeats on every visit, one repeats every year, and one repeats every month. None of them is used up after a single visit.

Why a recurring perk changes the program

A one-time welcome offer answers one question: will this person come in once? A recurring perk answers a better one: will this person come back, and will they identify themselves when they do?

The recurring perk gives members a reason to sign in on every visit. “Sign in when you visit” is the mechanism. Each visit where a member claims the chips is a visit the brand can connect to a real person. Over time that builds exactly the record most loyalty programs struggle to collect: who comes in, how often, and through which channel.

It also removes a problem most welcome programs create for themselves.

  • No expiry to chase. A one-time offer needs reminder emails, countdown copy, and a last-call send. Chips and salsa on every visit never expire, so there is nothing to chase.
  • No cliff after the first visit. With a one-time offer, the best reward a member will ever get from the program is the first one. Here, the second visit is as rewarding as the first.
  • A benefit people can explain. “You get free chips and salsa every time” is a sentence a member can repeat to a friend. That is a referral message the brand did not have to write.

The email does its job in the first two lines

Look again at the subject and preview together. The subject greets her by name and names the program. The preview names the headline perk, capitalizes the word that matters, and hints that there is more inside. A subscriber who never opens the email still knows what she got.

Chili’s also stated every condition in the fine print rather than hiding it. The birthday dessert requires a $5 purchase and is limited to the birthday month. The margarita price varies by location. We reviewed the top welcome emails in the study for internal contradictions, and the Chili’s welcome was clean: every statement about each offer agreed with every other statement about it.

What this means if you run one of these programs

  • Ask whether your welcome offer creates one visit or a habit. If the best reward a member gets is the first one, the program peaks on day one.
  • Pick a perk that is cheap to give often. Chips and salsa cost little and feel generous. The value is in the repetition, not the size.
  • Tie the perk to signing in. A benefit claimed by identifying yourself turns every visit into a known visit.
  • Put the perk in the preview line. The subject and preview are the only parts of the email every subscriber reads.
  • State the conditions once, clearly. Recurring perks earn trust by being simple. Keep the fine print consistent with the headline.

The takeaway

Most welcome offers are built to close a single sale. Chili’s built one to open a relationship, and it fits the entire proposition into a subject line, a preview, and three short perks. It is the simplest idea in the study, and no other brand we joined has done it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the My Chili's rewards program offer new members?

According to the Chili’s welcome email, members get free chips and salsa “valid upon joining and every visit,” a free dessert during their birthday month with a $5 minimum purchase, and a monthly margarita deal.

What is a recurring loyalty perk?

A benefit a member receives repeatedly, such as on every visit or every month, rather than once. It gives members an ongoing reason to return and to identify themselves when they do.

Are recurring rewards common in restaurant email programs?

No. Among the more than 300 programs we tried to join, Chili’s was the only brand offering a free item that recurs. Every other free item we captured was a one-time offer.

Why would a restaurant choose a recurring perk over a one-time discount?

A one-time discount creates one visit and then expires. A recurring perk rewards every visit, removes the need for expiry reminders, and gives the brand a reason for members to sign in each time they come in.
